# Integrate with Smartsheet

> Connect Smartsheet to your Zite app to read sheets, add rows, and update cells.

## How it works

[Smartsheet](https://www.smartsheet.com) is a spreadsheet-style tool for tracking work across sheets, rows, and columns. Connect Smartsheet to your Zite app to list sheets, read columns and rows, add rows, update cells, and delete rows, including from workflows. App visitors don't need to connect their own Smartsheet accounts; your app uses the account you connect.

By connecting Smartsheet, you can:

* List the sheets available to the connected account
* Read columns and rows from a sheet
* Add rows to a sheet
* Update cells in existing rows
* Delete rows

## How to integrate Smartsheet into your app

You need edit access to the Zite app and a Smartsheet access token from an account that can access the sheets you want to use. Smartsheet requires a **Business** or **Enterprise** plan to create a token. In Smartsheet, open **Personal Settings → API Access → Generate new access token**, then name the token and copy it.

**1. Connect to Smartsheet**

Ask Zite to connect your app to Smartsheet in the chat box. Alternatively, click **+** in the chat box, select **Integrations**, then choose **Smartsheet**.

Paste your Smartsheet access token into **API Key** without spaces and choose the **Region** that matches the Smartsheet site you sign in to. Click **Connect** to save the connection.

**2. Describe your use case**

Tell Zite how you want to use Smartsheet in your app. For example, "Show a dashboard of our project tracker sheet" or "Let the team submit tasks that add rows to our sheet."

Zite looks up the sheets and columns available to your connection. Tell it which sheet you want to use and what information your app should show or collect.

**3. Test and publish**

Check that your app shows rows from the sheet you selected. If your app adds or updates rows, try it with a sample row, then open Smartsheet and check the result. These tests change real sheet data, so use a row you have set aside for testing.

Click `Publish` in the upper right corner to deploy your changes and make the Smartsheet integration available in your live app.

## Common use cases

With a Smartsheet connection, you can create apps like:

* **Project Tracker Dashboards:** Show rows from a project sheet in a custom view for your team
* **Task Intake Forms:** Collect new work in your app and add each submission as a row
* **Status Update Tools:** Let people change status, dates, or owners on existing rows
* **Sheet Viewers:** Let clients or teammates browse a sheet without signing in to Smartsheet
* **Row Editors:** Add, update, or delete rows from a simple app instead of opening the sheet

## Important notes

* **Connect with a token:** You paste an access token from Smartsheet. You don't sign in to Smartsheet from Zite. Paste the token without spaces.
* **Account permissions:** Your app can only access sheets and perform actions allowed for the account that created the token. Check that account's sheet permissions if your app cannot read or update a row.
* **Region:** United States is selected by default. Choose the region that matches the Smartsheet site you sign in to: United States, Europe, Australia, or Smartsheet Gov. A token only works in its own region. If the connection is rejected, check that the region matches.
* **Zite finds your sheets:** Tell Zite which sheet to use. It looks up sheets and columns for you, including dropdown, date, checkbox, contact, and multi-select columns.
* **Columns your app can't change:** Auto-number, created date, formula, and locked columns can be shown in your app but not edited from it.
* **Zite apps only:** This connection is for Zite apps. It does not write from Fillout forms, and it does not import a sheet into your Zite database.
